castle island, harburg
Revitalisation of an industrially-used island, Hamburg, Germany
The vision for the ‘castle island’ is to strengthen existing characteristics and offer the possibility to develop individual neighbourhoods in the context of the Castle Island. The beneficial contrast between the edges of the island and the opposite land will be retained.
The existing access system is the result of the various overlapping historic layers and will be kept. New additions open new view axis and connect the island with the surroundings, giving access to the waterfront and connecting current isolated green spaces. The access system defines the future structure of the plots, laid out in a flexible way to be able to respond to the needs of current and future users. The added new layer will reflect the current economic and user pattern. In contrast to the flexibility of the plots the open spaces have a clear definition forming the spine of the new island layout.
The open space around the remaining fragments of the castle will be developed as the heart of the island. As a cultural and social centre it offers space for parties, markets, open air cinema and exhibitions. The hard paved space is raised two steps above the general ground level and integrates mature trees.
