Revitalisation Buckenberg barracks - Pforzheim, Germany

Various steps are proposed to transform the existing military barracks into a contemporary suburb. The formerly enclosed and isolated piazza will be connected with the existing neighbourhood through the demolition of the officers building. The piazza transforms into a green carpet, which unrolls from the existing neighbourhood across the whole site, overlaps with the Roman Road and will be enclosed by the forest at its south end. The green carpet with its open ends may be seen as a green common, making sure that there are visual and spatial connections between city and nature. The existing kitchen building and the new road will be crossing the common. The massing and height of the barracks buildings will be continued along the green carpet. The existing barrack buildings form the backbone for new buildings around courtyards, which assemble in the depth of the site and weave into the existing greenery structure. The forest around the edge of the site will be kept and enhanced; it wraps the new development. The buildings between the common and the surrounding forest decrease continuously in size, height and density.
