centocelle park
Conversion of the first airport of Rome, Italy
Our aim is to provide a park for Rome in the 21st century, one that will reinforce and enhance the existing network of green spaces. The all over idea is to deliver a framework for the site in Centocelle, rather than a completed design. Therefore the site will be covered with a forest of trees forming the boundary to the site where woods meet built areas. A variety of activities and green spaces will be integrated in the woodland, some already exist, other are new. The park area contains remnants of historical use. These will be excavated out of the forest to provide areas whose character reflects its original use in contrast to the other new discovered areas. ’Pockets’ are excavated out of the woodlands for service requirements of the adjacent communities; they contain some areas of more private nature, such as garden allotments, orchards as well as areas for barbecues and picnics. The ’islands’ are spaces with specific activities as sports, archipelago gardens, education and entertainment. A service grid overlay the whole park and provides infrastructure and services, such as water, electricity, toilets and space for gardeners.
