Landscaping around two tower blocks, Herdecke, Germany

Two local authority tower blocks, dating from the 1960ties, are located in a backyard situation on the edge of Herdecke in the Ruhr-Area. The site is dominated by unorganised parking and an unnecessary road, which fragments the space. The redesign explores the possibilities of integrating the needs of parking space and the possibilities of offering less sealed surfaces in two extreme solutions of contemporary landscape design. New housing shows additional potential for inner city developments on brown field site and unused backyards.
garden park is based on the modernist image of tower blocks in a green landscape. Parking is organised along the edge of the site. The central green space offers communal facilities, such as playgrounds, water installations, composting and a large table for summer gatherings. parking garden is based on the idea that parking and green space do not need to be a contradiction. The desire for individual open spaces and the needs of parking are combined by designing a mosaic of fifty small gardens. Every individual ’parking garden’ offers a fruit tree and enough space for flowers, carrots and ’garden gnomes’ ... and a car.
