cultivated wilderness
Parque Urbano Central, La Paz, Bolivia
The key response at this scale is to bring the 17 sites and the areas in between into the sphere of influence of the Parque Urbano Central, thus freeing the scheme from the tyranny of ’ownership boundaries’. The primary physical element of this response is the definition of a Ring Boulevard that links the main park with the 17 surrounding sites. Capturing physically the process of movement through the park is the main vision. Movement patterns create a framework for greening, gardens and buildings. Principally there are three ways of flow through the park: ’circular’ ’across’ & ’downstream’. The route through the park, either for leisure or part of an everyday life connection should stimulate the senses by different colours, smells, surfaces and temperatures. A ’cultivated wilderness’ forms the linking element between city and nature, whilst moving downstream.
