River banks within the city, Wuppertal, Germany

The aim of this invited landscape design competition is the redesign of a couple of fragmented open spaces along the urban river banks in order to integrate them into a wider conceptual context. Based on an existing urban framework plan, participants were asked to design ’balconies’, ’promenades’ and ’beaches’ along the river banks. The overall design is based on the idea of the river being a constant band of movement, either of water, people or transport. The sites along the river were interpreted with atmospheric landscape images such as ’ Mountain view’, ’Sand-bay’ or ’Rock & River-mouth’ forming a contrast to the dense surrounding city fabric. Even the materiality of the new spaces is influenced by the river stream. Stones and rocks are treated, smoothed and moved by the constant flow of water. Therefore the natural stone of the valley is used in different sizes as well as granular. Additionally the natural stone is contrasted with other materials for example with concrete, sand, wood and steel.
